EUMETSAT operates a portfolio of cloud-based big data services that bring users close to earth observation data. The portfolio is based on advanced cloud architectures, applications, user portals and hosted processing capabilities with full integration across the entire cloud stack from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) up to Data as a Service (DaaS). EUMETSAT plays a key role in several cloud-based international initiatives such as DIAS WekEO, European Weather Cloud (EWC) and Destination Earth.

The Cloud Services Competence Area in the Digital Solutions and SAF Division (DSA) is looking for specialist who is passionate about modern cloud technologies and interested in supporting digital transformation and modernization of traditional approaches to data processing, access, and use.

The Cloud AI/ML Engineer will be a member of a young and striving team and will be engaged in the design and architecture of machine learning solutions for user driven use cases in the area of Earth Observation Data applications, for implementation by European Industry.

The role includes handling of large, complex datasets and creating repeatable, reusable code. This applies to the whole lifecycle starting from the development of proof-of-concepts up to operational services. The post holder makes ML accessible and enables for the teams across the organization.

  • Design and develop the architecture of machine learning solutions for user driven use cases in the area of Earth Observation Data applications;
  • Design data pipelines and architectures for data processing in the cloud;
  • Interact with user representatives and users directly to identify areas for applying cloud native and machine learning concepts;
  • Support the user implementation through architecture guidance, best practices, data migration, capacity planning, implementation, troubleshooting and monitoring;
  • Keep abreast with industry trends, advancements, and best practices in this domain and leverage this knowledge to drive innovation by starting new proof-of-concepts;
  • Interact on a technical level with industrial service providers and partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

University degree in data science (AI/ML), cloud engineering, cloud computing or other relevant discipline.


LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

  • Design and develop the architecture of machine learning solutions for user driven use cases in the area of Earth Observation Data applications;
  • Design data pipelines and architectures for data processing in the cloud;
  • Interact with user representatives and users directly to identify areas for applying cloud native and machine learning concepts;
  • Support the user implementation through architecture guidance, best practices, data migration, capacity planning, implementation, troubleshooting and monitoring;
  • Keep abreast with industry trends, advancements, and best practices in this domain and leverage this knowledge to drive innovation by starting new proof-of-concepts;
  • Interact on a technical level with industrial service providers and partners.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong programming skills and experience with data platforms and distributed data processing tools;
  • Proficiency in the areas of model architecture, data and ML pipeline creation, and metrics interpretation;
  • Solid understanding of foundational concepts of MLOps, application development, infrastructure management, data engineering, and data governance;
  • Hands-on experience with Linux operating systems;
  • Knowledge of software engineering in the context of cloud native applications;
  • Readiness to learn / expand the own knowledge combined with excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to work in a team.

For this role some of the following knowledge would be advantageous:

  • Earth Observation Data;
  • Experience with TensorFlow, Keras, Theano, NumPy or similar;
  • Knowledge of GPU technology and CUDA.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 6903 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
