This position is located within the Strategy, Communication and International Relations (SCIR) Division, which is responsible for promoting the activities of EUMETSAT to relevant target audiences through the provision of high-quality external communications such as press releases and publications and the organisation of conferences, events and visits.

Within the Translation Section reporting to the Head of SCIR Division, the Head Translator supervises, organises and carries out translation activities at EUMETSAT, mainly from English into French and occasionally from English into German or any other language pairs not handled internally, supported by a small internal translation team and a pool of external translators.

Duties

  • Translate documents for the annual rounds of Delegate Bodies, which includes developing a dedicated work plan, managing translation projects and monitoring workloads and relevant resources;
  • Translate official reporting provided by the Organisation such as the Annual report and the User Forum in Africa report;
  • Translate EUMETSAT brochures, presentations, web pages, contracts, reports, basic documents, press releases, vacancy notices and other relevant material as necessary;
  • Coordinate the activities of the second Translator and support their professional development;
  • Manage the contract for external translation services, monitor the quality and delivery of services, exercise options and renew contracts as necessary;
  • Review and control the quality of translations provided by second Translator and external translation services;
  • Provide relevant and timely input to the divisional project and budget planning and monitoring;
  • Maintain divisional working practices and procedures relating to translations;
  • Keep abreast of new developments in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and machine translations to integrate and make the most of these solutions into the translation process.

A university degree or equivalent in Translation is required.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven professional experience of at least 5 years in managing translation services from English into French. Experience in an international environment is an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience in translating and editing texts covering a wide range of subjects covering all activities of EUMETSAT (legal, budgetary, financial, administrative, scientific/technical) as well as general documents of an editorial style;
  • An interest in, a good knowledge of, and/or a previous experience in translating in fields of business relevance to EUMETSAT (e.g. science, meteorology, climate, space industry) would be asset;
  • Ability to translate original documents drafted by non-native users of English and to carry out quality control of own translated texts;
  • Ability to provide accurate and reliable translations of the above documentation within possibly short timeframes;
  • Experience managing a small team and/or a service contract, requiring planning and organisational skills, would be advantageous;
  • Demonstrable experience working in and across teams, requiring cultural sensitivity with strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with authors, in-house services of the Organisation, free-lance translators and agencies;
  • Demonstrated integrity, discretion, confidentiality with regards translation of sensitive and confidential documents;
  • Experience working with professional CAT tools.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded L2/L3 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 7,262.80 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
