Temporary Flight Dynamics Engineer (maternity cover)

EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency - monitoring the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Within the Operations and Services to Users Department (OPS), the Flight Operations (FLO) Division is tasked with conducting space flight operations and supporting the development of future missions, including flight dynamics and mission analysis activities.

EUMETSAT has an open vacancy for a temporary Flight Dynamics Engineer for a period of six months to provide maternity cover within the FLO Division. This opportunity may provide 'hands on' working experience to recent graduates, with appropriate qualifications, that have ambitions to work within the space sector.

Duties

The main responsibility of the will be to provide support to the Flight Dynamics and Mission Analysis area, which will include the following tasks:

  • Providing Mission analysis and Flight Dynamics support, mainly for Low Earth Orbit missions, for routine operations as well as early mission phases and disposal, and support to ongoing operations as needed, for offline analysis of Flight Dynamics performances or effective monitoring & management of collision risks;
  • Support to the re-engineering of existing flight dynamics and conjunction management systems.

A university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. computer sciences, physics, aerospace engineering, mathematics).


LANGUAGES

Candidates must be able to work effectively in English.

Duties

The main responsibility of the will be to provide support to the Flight Dynamics and Mission Analysis area, which will include the following tasks:

  • Providing Mission analysis and Flight Dynamics support, mainly for Low Earth Orbit missions, for routine operations as well as early mission phases and disposal, and support to ongoing operations as needed, for offline analysis of Flight Dynamics performances or effective monitoring & management of collision risks;
  • Support to the re-engineering of existing flight dynamics and conjunction management systems.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications/experience:

  • A university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. computer sciences, physics, aerospace engineering, mathematics), in particular with a background covering orbit mechanics along with mathematics and applied sciences.
  • Knowledge of Earth Sun-Synchronous and Geostationary orbits, their environments and the related station-keeping concepts would be desirable.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems and programming languages with focus on mathematical applications (in particular Java, Python or Matlab) would be an advantage.
  • Further able to communicate effectively, prepare documentation in a clear, concise style (e.g. reports), be comfortable working with people from various professional and cultural backgrounds, and be capable of completing some tasks alone.

Employment Conditions

The Temporary Flight Dynamics Engineer will work on a full-time basis. The role will be based at the EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Remote working will not be possible.

Interviews for this position will be held in English, followed by a work-related assessment also in English.

NB This is NOT a staff role. The successful candidate would be employed through a temp agency for the duration of the contract. Agency employment conditions will apply. Applicants will need to have the right to work in Germany. Visa or work permit support will not be provided.

The target start date is 1 September 2024 for 6 months maternity cover with strong possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will be reporting to Flight Dynamics & Mission Analysis Manager.
